Autumn and Winter Trends at Sofas Direct
During the colder months of the year, we all spend more time in our living rooms than at other times of the year. When it’s raining, dark or just freezing cold outside, all we want to do is stay at home, in comfort. It’s no surprise therefore that interior design gets even more important at this time of year. We all want somewhere warm, comfortable and welcoming where we can relax after coming home from work and ignore the dreadful weather outside. If you’re thinking about giving your living room a makeover before the worst of the winter weather strikes, what are the key 2020 design trends which you should be looking for?
Layering
When it comes to clothes, we’re all used to the idea that in the colder months you layer up with clothing to keep warm and comfortable. The same tricks can be tried with your home. Layer up your sofa with some new knitted or fleecy throws in vibrant colours to brighten up your room and make the whole space more welcoming. Invest in some new knitted cushions, or look for fake fur cushions which are ideal for snuggling into while you watch telly or play games with the kids.
Embrace the Black
It’s going to be a whole before we’re recommending black walls and carpets for any family home. Homeowners are traditionally fairly scared of black and food good reasons. It’s a hard colour to use properly in a home, but when done well it can be very effective. Black works best in small bursts. Think about getting a small black chair for the corner of the room, or make a larger impact with a black sofa. It’s easy to break up the black on furniture with some colourful cushions or throws, and these are easy to change when fashions move on. Match your black furniture with copper or gold for a very modern look.
Golden Glow
Metallics have been a big trend in interior design for many years, and aren’t going anywhere soon. Gold adds warmth and glitter to any home, and works particularly well in darker months when the lights are on and reflecting off the golden surfaces. Gold accessories are everywhere in the shops, and you can buy into this trend by opting for something small like a photo frame or vase, or by choosing something much larger such as a big gold framed mirror or a table with a metallic finish. Look for furniture and accessories with unusual shapes to make more of an impact.
Deep Shades
Don’t be afraid of using deeper shades in your home rather than sticking to neutrals or pastel shades. Deep shades of forest green, ruby red and navy blue can be highly effective when used in moderation in your home. Feature wallpapered walls have fallen out of fashion but the same concept works very well with painted walls too. If you don’t want to decorate but are in the market for a new sofa, then why not consider a strong colour rather than defaulting to the neutrals?
Wood
Wood and other natural materials is one of the best ways of making any home feel warmer and more welcoming. There are lots of ways of adding a bit of wood into your home without going to the expense of replacing all of the floors. Choose wooden shutters or blinds the next time you want to replace the window coverings, or get some chunky wooden picture frames to replace thinner metal ones. Look for wooden accessories such as plant pots or ornaments, or put up some chunky wooden shelves for additional storage.
